Pirna Sculpture Summer 2022/23 – In honour of Canaletto

At a glance

Symbols in stone

Every year an art exhibition takes place on the sunstone high above the city of Pirna, which is probably unique in its kind. Below the castle, in the bastions of the former fortress, the interplay of colossal defence architecture and filigree figurative art is once again evident this year, offering a charming symbiosis of seemingly contradictory contrasts.

The 300. In honour of the anniversary of the painter Bernardo Bellotto, gen. Canaletto (1722 – 1780), the Cultural and Tourism Company Pirna presents “Symbols in Stone. ” Thanks to the Sandstone Works Pirna, the Zwingerbauhütte Dresden and sixteen contemporary sculptors from Germany, original Baroque works are juxtaposed with stone sculptures of the present. This creates particularly attractive lines of tension between the sculptures, but also deep symbols that illuminate the external appearances and the inner essence of being human. Particular attention is paid to the material stone.

Visits are possible from 28 May to 25 September 2022 every Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 1 p. m. or as part of the public bastion tour of the TouristService Pirna.
