opera "Aida"

At a glance

Christmas Eve 1871. In the newly built opera house in Cairo, the curtain rises for the premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Aida”.

In a culturally historically memorable moment, Western and Eastern yearnings for exoticism here and nobility by European high culture there merge into a brilliant performance. Since then, there have been few opera titles, And quite rightly so, because “Aida” with its musical-stage effects and exotic sounds, the refined colour of the instrumentation and the alternation between monumentality and intimacy holds a musical-dramatic treasure in the best sense. More than that. With the tragic love of the Ethiopian Princess Aida and the Egyptian commander Radamès, crushed between the interests of the State, the Church and relatives, Giuseppe Verdi reflects the crisis-ridden state of the modern individual – and ends with a most moving plea for the utopian power of love.
