On Museum Day, visitors can take a unique look inside the 130-year-old underground war hospital at Königstein Fortress.
The complex was built between 1891 and 1893 as part of the expansion of the fortress into the German Reich's Sperrfort. 2000 cubic meters of rock were blasted out for this purpose. It was the last hollow structure built underground on the Königstein. The military hospital was probably only used by the Red Army when it took command of Königstein Fortress from 1945 to 1949. Wall drawings from that time have been preserved to this day and are extraordinary historical evidence.
The open rooms, connected by a long corridor, are cold and clammy. How would sick people have recovered in these conditions 130 years ago? How would they have been cared for? On Museum Day, members of the Königstein Fortress Association take interested visitors on guided tours of the complex several times a day between 12 noon and 4 pm, shedding light on the historical background and highlighting special architectural features.
The tours are included in the price of admission to the fortress. Königstein Fortress is open from 9 am to 6 pm. The tours take place between 12 noon and 4 pm.
