After two World Championships in recent years, SachsenEnergieEiskanal in Altenberg is looking forward to the 52nd FIL Luge World Championships in 2024.
After two Bobsleigh & Skeleton World Championships in 2020 and 2021, the team from the SachsenEnergieEiskanal in Altenberg is already looking forward to the next world title competitions in a runner sport. In coordination with the International Luge Federation, FIL, the 52nd FIL Luge World Championships 2024 have now been scheduled. They will take place from 22 to 28 January 2024 on the traditional luge and bobsleigh track in the Osterzgebirge mountains. Beforehand, there will be an international training week from 15 to 20 January 2024. "We are very much looking forward to hosting the third World Championships in five years. With this, we are continuing a long-standing tradition. Since 1991, Altenberg has hosted eight World Championships and two Junior World Championships. The organising committee as well as the entire team of the SachsenEnergie-Eiskanal are grateful for the FIL's trust and highly motivated to offer the world's best lugers and the spectators a great celebration of sport also in 2024", says Jens Morgenstern, OC chief and managing director of the track operator Wintersport Altenberg (Osterzgebirge) GmbH (WiA). The owner of the luge and bobsleigh track in Altenberg is the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge. District Administrator Michael Geisler: "The Altenberg location remains a permanent fixture in the organisation of international championships and thus makes an important contribution to the external image of the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge and the Free State of Saxony as a partner for top international sport. The media attention and the influx of guests from all over the world associated with the World Championships2024 are also important for the added value of the economy based here, especially for tourism." The SachsenEnergie-Eiskanal had applied together with the Luge, Bobsleigh & Skeleton Association for Saxony e.V. (RBSV) to host the event. (RBSV) applied for the organisation of the 52nd FIL Luge World Championships in 2024 and was awarded the contract by the 68th Congress of the International Luge Federation, FIL, in November 2020. After 1996 and 2012, Altenberg will thus host the World Luge Championships for the third time.
