The extraordinary sculptures by artist Rebecca Stevenson are inspired by Baroque and Rococo art and explore today’s desires and excesses.

Using soft, colourful wax, but also bronze and other materials, the artist explores the transformation processes of becoming and passing and transmits the Baroque concept of Vanitas to our present day. Stevenson’s wax sculptures are inspired by the Dutch’s lush still lifes of killed game, fruits and flowers. They are a feast for the eye, as was once conjured up by confectioners made of delicate sugar on royal tables. But objects made of natural materials, once collected in courtly chambers of wonder, are also being rediscovered and brought to life. The sculptures combine the serious and the absurd, the beautiful and the grotesque, blurring the boundaries between “good” and “bad” taste.
