 – few other artists are of such great importance for the development of modern art in Germany. Together with their artist friends, they belonged to the two most important groups of early modernism: the Bridge and the Blue Rider. Their names today stand for the expressionist avant-garde before the First World War, for freedom and departure. For the first time in over 25 years in Germany, they will be comprehensively exhibited in their group dynamics with masterpieces of modernity.

Major works of the two groups from the important collections of the Buchheim Museum, the Von der Heydt Museum and the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, complemented by important exhibits from national and international lenders, combine to form an intensive dialogical show. The catalogue and accompanying programme shed light on her artistic achievements in the context of time and discusses the ambivalent heritage of Expressionism in the 20th century.
