For this year, however, all signs of relaxation, openness and hope for an end are now in place, so that the planning for the anniversary edition is underway.
In 1995, nine companies in the region joined together under the name “Oberlausitzer Leinen” and launched the first International Upper Lusatian Linen Days. What began with a handful of exhibitors had grown over the past 25 years into a large market with more than 200 manufacturers, designers and craftsmen from many European countries. They show at their stands what can be made of this precious, renewable raw material and present their creations. Visitors can see how many steps it takes to turn the small blue flax flower into linen, and learn that people probably used it for clothing a long time ago.
In recent years, the Baroque Castle Rammenau has worked intensively to sharpen the profile of the market and to focus more strongly on the main theme of linen. Modern creations made of linen and other natural materials can be discovered not only at the stands, but also at the large fashion show of the Chemnitz Fashion Mill during the linen days. A market of forgotten crafts and music on two open-air stages also provide entertainment and variety.
To coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Linen Days, the special exhibition “Linen & Co”. by the textile artist Brigitte Kumpf can be seen in the castle from Maundy Thursday, April 14th. She has been working with textile design for more than 30 years and began with the traditional work “Quilt”, which is a three-layer work associated with quilts. She broke away from traditional requirements and looked for new ways. Using coloured linen fabrics from Paapje, she was able to create objects that were still attached to the quilt, but were cut freely and with the inclusion of cotton and denim fabrics.
The exhibition will be on view in the Baroque Palace Rammenau until 28 August 2022.
