The renowned mud and mineral spa Bad Elster was elevated to the status of Royal Saxon State Spa by King Friedrich August II when the first bathing season opened on 25 June 1848, marking the beginning of Bad Elster's rise as a meeting place for European society. For this reason, Bad Elster is now celebrating its 175th anniversary as a Royal Saxon State Spa from 17 to 25 June with a large festival week of a wide variety of public attractions.
Varied festival week culture
The jubilee festival week will open on Saturday, 17 June on the bathing area with the big MDR live programme "Damals' war's". The popular presenter Wolfgang Lippert will then celebrate a colourful "Summer of Love" live in Bad Elster with performances by stars such as Stefanie Hertel, Julia Lindholm and the 80s disco legend Ottawan! There will also be guest appearances by local artists such as Brezel Brass and the Elster Fosnet Club. Other highlights of the festival week include a theatre show by Vladimir Kaminer (17 June), the play "Don Quixote" (18 June) and a comedy evening with Bernd Stelter (22 June) at the König Albert Theater. In addition, the festival week offers a Bad Elster love film as a Monday cinema (19.06.), the festive event for the "Award of the Great Elster" (20.06.) and further concerts in the Royal Gardens.

Fountain Festival Weekend as Crowning Finale

For this reason, the great jubilee festival week 2023 will culminate in the 111th Fountain Festival from 23 to 25 June: it will start on Friday with the official festive concert celebrating 175 years of the Royal Saxon State Spa Bad Elster in the NaturTheater under the patronage and in the presence of the Prime Minister of Saxony. Under the direction of GMD Florian Merz, a spectacular open-air classical gala will be performed as a spirited Spanish fireworks display to mark the anniversary year, including star guest Pavel Sporcl and his blue violin! On Saturday, in addition to the colourful festivities full of attractions, there will be the big fountain festival party on the bathing area, before the 21st Vogtland Shawm Spectacle with numerous bands from the region will put the royal grounds in a musical festive mood on Sunday.
